In the latest issue of the donkey magazine, Robin from Hay to You talked about different types of roughage and gave tips on what to look for to make the right choice, also about the roughage Lucerne. This hay is a subspecies of clover and is often grown in warmer climates such as Spain or southern France. In this blog, we will tell you more about this Lucerne hay and everything you need to know.
Prefer lucerne hay over lucerne
As we just mentioned, Lucerne is a subspecies of clover, and most people know it as a mechanically dried product, for example, chopped finely in bags. But just as beautiful and good for your animal is lucerne hay, the whole dried plant. This is a very coarse and hard product and is packed with good vitamins and minerals, and it also contains a lot of protein. The ideal supplement for a grazer that could use some extra energy! Lucerne hay is often harvested in three or four cuts per year. The first cut around April/May and then again every 2 months.
Supplementing with lucerne hay
The first cut is often the coarsest, while the later cuts are somewhat finer. You will not easily find this hay in the Netherlands because it is a somewhat unknown product, but that certainly does not make it less suitable. We advise to feed lucerne hay only as a supplement to the hay you already use as a base. Do you want your animal to get more protein, for example, for muscle building? Then you can supplement with 1 or 2 kg of lucerne hay per day. You will notice that they really enjoy this hay.
Choose the right batch of lucerne for your animal
An important factor to pay attention to when purchasing lucerne hay is that it has been dried under good conditions. Only buy lucerne hay from batches that have expertise and can give you good advice about this hay.
