During the Horse Event 2023, we welcomed you en masse at our booth. Thank you for your interest, pleasant conversations, good questions, and compliments!
"Know what your animal eats," we find that extremely important. Therefore, we would like to know if you knew the answers to our quiz questions. Not all questions were answered correctly, so it's good to pay attention to this.
Question 1: which hay is richer? The 1st or 2nd cut?
o A. First cut
o B. Second cut
o C. You cannot know this without analysis
§ Correct answer: C
Even we, as experienced forage suppliers, cannot estimate how rich the hay is. Sometimes we see very different results from similar batches. So the remedy is always to analyze so you know what your animal eats!
Question 2: how many kilos of hay does a horse eat on average per day?
o A 7-9 kg/day
o B. 9-11 kg/day
o C. 11-13 kg/day
§ Correct answer: B
This is a bit of a trick question; for this answer, we calculated with a horse weighing 700kg. However, this can vary greatly. For a horse, we use 1.5% roughage per day per kg of body weight. For a 700kg horse, that comes to 700 x 1.5% = 10.5 kg per day. Roughage is the basis, and not every horse eats the same amount. It is best to offer unlimited roughage, preferably poorer hay. You can then supplement proteins with pellets or alfalfa.
Question 3: which plant is more harmful in small amounts? Jacob's ladder or Autumn crocus?
o A. Jacob's ladder
o B. Autumn crocus
o C. Both are equally harmful
§ Correct answer: B
During the presentation at the Horse Event, we explained the differences. Many people see Jacob's ladder as a very toxic plant. That is true, but the lethal amount is very high. A horse often needs to eat 100 or more plants before it will die from it. The unfortunate thing is that it is cumulative poison. The amount can also be reached over several years.
Autumn crocus, on the other hand, is deadly even in small amounts, and that is why it is the correct answer. Keep an eye on our webinars if you want to know more about harmful weeds.
Question 4: which component in hay contributes to your horse's muscle building?
o A. Protein
o B. Sugar
o C. Structure
§ Correct answer: A
Most people got this question right; protein is very important for muscle building. Especially young horses in growth, but also older horses that want to maintain weight or horses that are active in sports need a lot of protein. Did you know that Hay to You also sells alfalfa hay?! Alfalfa contains a lot of protein and little sugar. It is therefore an ideal supplement if you are looking for more protein in your ration.
