Last month, Hay to You contributed to an article in the Donkey Magazine. In it, we wrote about facts and fables of roughage analysis. Roughage is being analyzed more and more often. This is very good because we believe it is very important to know what your animal eats!

When we analyze our roughage, a well-known parameter that we measure is: ‘energy’. “Personally, this doesn’t mean much to me,” says Robin in the Donkey Magazine. “But what is important is where this energy comes from. Sugar is not desirable, while protein is. It is nice that these parameters are specified. Animals that need to gain weight or require a lot of energy due to movement, such as sport horses, need this. On the other hand, sober animals like cold-blooded horses or donkeys do not need this.”
Measuring sugar content of hay
The next pillar in the analysis is the sugar content. This is an important measure, as many animals suffer from lifestyle diseases related to their diet. Just like in humans, excessive sugar intake in the diet of animals can cause problems. Therefore, it is essential to know how much sugar is in your hay and how much your animal can process.
With analyzed hay, you know how much protein your animal is getting
Do you have analyzed hay? Then the protein has also been measured, also known as protein. An animal needs protein for muscle building and muscle maintenance. Both young and old animals need this, as well as pregnant animals and animals that are very active. Resting animals that are already at a healthy weight or even (a little) overweight, on the other hand, need less protein.
