From time to time, we like to keep you updated on the developments regarding roughage and bedding materials. Sometimes we see movements in the market that we want to share with you, so you can purchase the right products at the right time. The balance between supply and demand changes regularly; one moment there is plenty of choice, the next moment good products are difficult to find. Especially when the market is a bit unsettled, that can be the moment to buy. This way, you benefit from lower prices and avoid having to reorder when everything suddenly becomes more expensive.
In 2024, we had a wet summer, which caused bedding materials to rise significantly in price. Now it is spring 2025 – time for an update! Straw remains scarce and expensive, but thanks to the relatively mild winter and the warm, dry weather in February and March, many animals are already enjoying being outside. As a result, we see that the straw price is stabilizing a bit. At the same time, some products are coming to the market at sharper prices. This could very well be a good time to stock up!
Flax, for instance, is currently historically cheap. Hay and alfalfa hay are also affordable and of good quality, with low sugar levels. We have nice batches of these available.
Hay and alfalfa hay are currently widely available at decent prices. Due to dry and warm winter and spring months, there is now more supply than normal and also less demand. Do keep in mind that if it remains this dry, hay may still become scarce in a few months. Our advice? Think ahead about what you still need until the new harvest. Everything is currently well available. We expect the new harvest around mid-June, but the hay will still need about six weeks to dry and 'die off'. Ensure you have a stock that will last you until August 1.
The new straw harvest usually comes in early August. Whether there will be a lot or little available remains to be seen – but it looks good at the moment. Our advice: only order what you need until August/September. There is a good chance that prices will drop afterward. In the meantime, especially consider flax: this product is currently historically cheap. Are you already using it? Then this is the moment to stock up. Haven't tried it yet? Perhaps a great opportunity to switch!
Finally: it is not easy to predict what the weather will bring. What we can say is that extreme weather is occurring more frequently, making products difficult to obtain or of lesser quality than we would like. Fortunately, we – thanks to our network throughout Northwest Europe – can quickly adapt to market changes. Together, we ensure that your furry friend(s) always receive the right roughage and bedding materials!
