New harvest hay? Just a little more patience! / News
Hey, I saw grass being cut this week? The weather is super nice now, so there should be a new harvest of hay, right? This is a question we hear and read regularly. We would like to respond to this.
First cut grass is not hay
The answer is: unfortunately… no matter how good the grass looks that is cut in April and May, it is not intended for hay. This grass is almost always meant for silage or pre-drying.
Risk of fermentation
What about the first cut grass? Well, in spring, the grass has just started to grow. It may look long, but it mainly consists of leaves and lacks the structure that good hay needs. Moreover, this spring grass is quite rich and difficult to dry properly. And if you do manage to dry it, there is a high risk of fermentation. And believe us: you don’t want that. Every year, barns and sheds are lost due to fires caused by hay fermentation.
New harvest of hay from June
Really good hay is only harvested from early or mid-June – provided the weather cooperates. In 2024, the harvest was significantly delayed due to the wet weather in June. The grass must first be sufficiently 'ripe' and then there must also be a few days of good dry weather to be able to make hay.
And did you know that you should let fresh hay sit for about six weeks before you can safely feed it? Fresh hay is still 'working' a bit and that process can cause colic in horses. Therefore, we recommend continuing to feed hay from the old harvest until about August 1st. That way, you can be sure that the new hay has sufficiently died off.
