Hay, I saw grass lying down this week? The weather is great now, so there must be a new harvest of hay, right? This is a question we hear and read regularly. We would like to give you a response.
First mown grass is not hay
The answer is: unfortunately... no matter how good the grass that is mown in April and May looks, it is not intended for hay. This grass is almost always intended for silage or pre-drying.
Risk of heating
What about the first mown grass? Well, in the spring the grass has only just started. It may look long, but it mainly consists of leaves and lacks the structure that good hay needs. Moreover, this spring grass is quite rich and difficult to get really dry. And if you do manage to do so, you run a great risk of heating. And believe us: you don't want that. Every year, stables and sheds are lost to fire caused by hay heating.
New hay harvest from June
Really good hay is only harvested from the beginning or middle of June – if the weather cooperates. In 2024, the harvest even extended considerably due to the wet weather in June. The grass must first be sufficiently ‘ripe’ and then it must also be dry for a few days to be able to make hay.
And did you know that you have to leave fresh hay for about six weeks before you can safely feed it? Fresh hay still ‘works’ a little and that process can cause colic in horses. That is why we recommend continuing to feed hay from the old harvest until about 1 August. Then you can be sure that the new hay has died sufficiently.
